Democracy in Motion

Democracy in Motion is a national pilot project implemented in two counties: Jönköping County and Västerbotten. In Jönköping, the target group is high school students and in Västerbotten, adults. In Jönköping County, the school library is the hub, in Västerbotten it is the public library and there the pilot is part of the project The Word is Free!

In Democracy in Motion, participants take part in and discuss literature, documentaries and podcasts with content linked to society, the media and information landscape and democracy. One idea being tested is a “democratic canon”.

Porträtt av man

"We are both happy and proud to be the first region in Sweden to test the concept of a democratic canon together with several schools in the county. It is an opportunity to equip today’s young people and future citizens for democratic development."

says Magnus Jonsson, Head of Cultural Development in Jönköping County.

The aim is also to stimulate innovation around how the meeting places of society and culture can collaborate and be modernised as democratic infrastructure.
The ambition is to upgrade the pilot to a larger research and innovation project from the second half of 2026.

The collaborating partners are Region Jönköping County, Region Västerbotten, Jönköping County Museum and Media & Democracy. Researchers at the University of Borås are studying the pilot and the Gothenburg Book Fair is an arena. The co-financier is the Hamrin Foundation.

The pilot project runs from September 2025 to June 2026.
