New Swedes and Swedish News Media
The research project "New Swedes and Swedish News Media" examines the news consumption habits of young adults who arrived in Sweden during the 2015-2016 refugee wave. At that time, this group consisted of children and teenagers; today, they are 18 years and older, and there's limited knowledge about their media and news behaviors.
The research project addresses questions such as:
- How do immigrants use news media?
- How do immigrants perceive the reliability of journalism?
- What are the self-perceived barriers to not consuming Swedish news media?
- How do immigrants perceive their ability to access news about politics and society?
This project is a collaboration between Media & Democracy and the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG) at the University of Gothenburg. The lead researcher is Associate Professor Ulrika Andersson, who also serves as the Deputy Director of the SOM Institute.
"The extent of news consumption and the perceived ability to absorb civic journalism are key factors in understanding the degree of integration into Swedish society,"
says Ulrika Andersson.
- Project Period: January 1, 2025 – February 28, 2026.
- Funder: Anne-Marie and Gustaf Anders Foundation for Media Research.
