Pilotstudie av traineeprogram på Sydsvenskan
This project will examine a new initiative at Sydsvenskan, focusing on a trainee program for editorial talent. In spring 2025, Sydsvenskan began recruiting young adults to its central newsroom in Malmö. This strategic initiative is based on several key needs:
The newspaper needs new voices.
The newspaper needs to reach a new, younger audience.
The newspaper's newsrooms need a greater diversity of backgrounds.
The newspaper needs to establish trust in journalism and news media among a more media-skeptical generation.
The initiative is a part-time, one-year trainee program targeting 18-22-year-olds. The trainees work an average of one day per week for the newspaper and are coached by an active editorial team. The ambition is high: the journalism, while not adhering to traditional templates, should maintain high quality and stem from the trainees' everyday lives. Additionally, the program includes internal courses on topics such as the principle of public access, press ethics, and work methodologies.
The pilot study of the trainee program is led by Professor Kristoffer Holt at Linnaeus University. The fundamental question is how the trainees' perspectives on, and trust in, journalism change based on this model. Media & Democracy is responsible for coordination and knowledge dissemination.
"This is a very exciting project that also reflects societal developments in an interesting way,"
says Kristoffer Holt.
The results will complement two other projects in which Linnaeus University and Media & Democracy have collaborated and continue to collaborate: "Young Citizens and Quality of News" and "Young Citizens and Local News."
