Young Citizens and Local News: What, Where and Why?
This project is a continuation of "Young citizens and the quality of news: Construals, Emotions and Strategies." That previous project investigated how young news consumers aged 18 to 25 perceive news quality by combining interviews with eye-tracking studies and emotion measurement. In "Young Citizens and Local News: What, Where and Why?", the knowledge about young people's news experiences is further explored, with a focus on local journalism.
The research project is led by the Department of Media and Journalism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar and is based on three main questions: How do young citizens define local news? If they consume this type of news, where do they turn? Why do they (or do not) consume local news?
"There's much to suggest that the 18-to-25 age group doesn't engage with local news to the same extent as previous generations. Here, we want to try to understand their thinking. On one hand, the reasons for not consuming local news. On the other hand, and perhaps especially, how those who actually do consume local news experience it. Both what they think about local journalism and what they value,"
says Kristoffer Holt, Professor and Research Leader.
Just like part one, the study combines traditional methods such as interviews with laboratory tests in the Visualix lab. In this project, these experimental methods will be refined and further developed.
